I've seen it. It's real. And it's scary.

The Color of Money

The Green Brighton Task Force, created by Supervisor Frankel, started off the new year with a shindig at the Brighton Town Hall on January 7th.

Asking the public to pledge a 10% reduction in their "consumption of finite natural resources and increase their use of renewable resources." I preferred the web version rather than the paper, but hey, what's a few trees between friends.

"We've got to make our government, schools & homes more energy efficient, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce our reliance on imported oil. It just makes sense on so many levels," said town supervisor, Sandy Frankel.

Apparently, no one mentioned this little hippie thing called carpooling to the event. PACKED from front to back, more than I've ever seen at Town Hall. How else can you show off how Green you are by driving your Prius, alone.

Color Brighton Green is the official website for the Green Brighton Task Force.

I guess its by chance but the domain name for the organization expires on November 4, 2008........Election Day.

Now that's commitment.

WEll, I'm back after a foray into building plans, hardware searches, layout and color selections.

I have a suggestion for the Town of Brighton. The Park area of Buckland Park, Should be a demonsration (10 Years) in how to build and maintain lanscapes using organic methods. IE: Areas where there will be tree and shrub and gardnes should be drawn up. Waste from leaf collection and un-diseased trees should be heaped in these areas and allowed to compost for 3 Years. Thus will provide a wonderful organic base for the plantings.

Citizens should be asked to "Donate a tree, shrub or planting". Trees can be dedicated.

Make it a community effort. Hold occasional seminars, with plans and progress. Building a Landscape can be done without chemical intervention. And produce a more vigorous, adaptable environment.

When the trees have filled out, ground covers will eliminate the need for lawn mowing around the base, which can damage trees, and set progress behind 20 years.

Those are great ideas, but I have a feeling we need more large smooth grassy sports fields.

That's green, right?

Oh, and parking lots.

kaos,

I wish the "commitment" for a Green Brighton went beyond sound bites and the facade of Green living and addressed the foundation of of a change in thought. A change in thought that extends to at least Nov. 5.

Grass is the bane of my existence......... The Idea of more Grass, more Gas, more Pollution, More chemical, more Water. More more more.

What happened to the kids playing in the school fields?

Do we generate revenue from the rental of these fields for league play? Does it cover the cost of maintenance? If there has to be Grass, then we need to make money, to cover the expense.

"The Master Gardener Rant" in no way reflects the political leanings of the Ranter.

***So where are the windmills already?

I lived in CA for 10 years and the desert country north of L.A. was interesting in that they had no grass, just dirt yards with natural stones and shrubs. It was beautiful and I'd never seen anything like that. It was so natural.

Some of my neighbors are struggling to keep lawns. Our soil is various depth of sand over Dolomite rock.

Some have ammended with top soil and rebuilt their lawns, using lots of "Products" and water.
The problem with topsoil over sand is topsoil eventually slips down through the sand. You are back to square 1 after weathering.

I have ammended my soil with fresh tree shreds. Pine to Kill grass (high acid content.

And have ammended my yard every 2-3 years with an additional layer of fresh tree shreds (no longer pine in great quantity.

after 16 years, I now have 6 inches of black organic soil, over sand, and a gardern that is natural and appealing.

I do not have more than 250 sq feet of grass. The lawn mower is used twice a year.

Instead of mowing a lawn every week in summer, I can enjoy the out doors and putter in my garden.

The birds and wildlife have come back, and I now have a crop of beneficial insects.

Now if I could just stop my chemical happy neighbor from, killing more dogs and cats, and shrubbery to boot., I would be happy

I agree. Even though I do have grass I do not put chemicals on my lawn or my plants. I let bugs do their job and I do mine. I am trying to convince others close to me of the benefits of no chemicals but it is a losing battle so far. I am also trying to convince others close to me that leaf blowers are bad and our yard is so small that a push mower blade would be better. That is also a losing battle so far. I admire your work data girl.
