I've seen it. It's real. And it's scary.

06 January 2008

This and that....

Today is Iraq Army Day and celebrations were disrupted by yet another bombing.

From Reuters:

Reuters television footage showed a group of soldiers dancing in a tight circle in the street, waving their AK-47 assault rifles in the air and chanting "Where is terrorism today?" just minutes before the bomber struck.

snip

Reuters photographer Mohammed Ameen was taking pictures of an elderly resident placing flowers into the barrels of three soldiers' rifles when he was rocked by a thunderous bang.

Today is also the wedding anniversary of the parents of The Decider.

Last night I ran into a local re-elected Brighton Dem at an Irish pub. When asked about a certain policy change of the Town the answer was, "It's a no-brainer, many towns have been doing it for a long time." Why then has it taken this administration 16 years to adopt this no-brainer?

My oldest son's gender was questioned by a spectator at his lacrosse game yesterday shortly before knocking the questioning spectator's kid on there ass. The Eldest Spawn of Monkey has long flowing blond hair protruding from his helmet and resting below his shoulders. It's dreamy.

The Town of Brighton has launched a new website. Wow! More on that later.

And finally... "Is photography dead?"

Terrific article in Newsweek you linked. Photography has and always will be art and the more dynamic it becomes the stronger it will become. I reject stifled views of an evolving art form. Calling something dead means the questioner has a stagnant soul.

Do we say poetry is dead because we've moved beyond iambic pentameter and rhyming verse? Surely "minor" poets such as T.S. Eliot and W.H. Auden would beg to differ.

What about religion? Is it dead? If we were to use the same constraining definition, that something is dead once it morphs from its original inception then the answer would necessarily be "yes." But last time I checked religion is alive and wreaking more havoc on the world than ever due to its myriad manifestations and diverse purveyors of the "true" religion.

The only thing that's dead is the imagination of those who think photography is dead.

Speaking of photography..... It is not and never will be dead. unmodified it is the eye on reality we have all craved. Sometimes reality is terse, disgusting and abysmal. Sometimes it shows the grain of truth to be sifted out. Sometimes it is awe inspiring and beautiful.

Mostly, we mourn the dead, we have loved and admired.

But for some we wait patiently for the just reward that nature taking its course provides. As with the Decider, the only course of action is to wait. If he outlives me, I will have missed the opportunity to celebrate. Ding Dong.

And then there is the case of the church going neighbor, who poisoned (killed) my dog, 2 neighborhood cats, and many squirells in her quest for the perfect lawn. Lets just say I am waiting to celebrate. Or she could move.

But allow me to go out on a ledge here......Tuscan interiors are DEAD. Because the selection of home interiors has been stagnant. I do not think my soul is stagnant, I think I am tremendously bored with "the Look and Marketing plan".

I had my portrait framed today, and I was not at all ashamed of the custom frames cost. Sometimes records of trying times survived and overcome, but not forgotten give strength to us all. Hopefully my daughter will hang her mother in her home, when I'm gone. I plan on giving my detractors a very long wait indeed.

Until then, here's looing at you!
